Every dog has its own personality, but have you ever see a green puppy before? It’s okay, St. Patrick’s Day went overboard for her humans, so this pup isn’t green.
A green puppy was a surprise gift for this Canadian couple on St. Patrick’s Day. On Jan. 27, Audrey Rhys and Trevor Mosher told The Chronicle Herald they feared for the worst when Freya, a boxer and bulldog hybrid, gave birth to an amniotic sac. It was presumed the pup inside this unusually colored sac was stillborn since when she arrived, she was not with the other seven puppies Freya delivered in clear sacs

When the puppy started moving, something amazing happened.
We noticed she was green as we were drying her off. Our first reaction was to Google, “What’s wrong, if my puppy is green?” said Rhys.

The event is extremely rare, according to Dr. Bronwyn Crane, professor of veterinary reproduction at the Atlantic Veterinary College at the University of Prince Edward Island. Although she couldn’t provide an exact rate of occurrence, she said she would suspect it was 1:10,000 or less, the puppy was green for the first time, she said. When pups come into contact with biliverdin during development, they may develop a green tint. A puppy’s fur can sometimes be dyed green from the pigment in bruises and amniotic fluid, giving bruises their greenish color.
It is a miracle that Rhys and Mosher named Fiona after the popular character from Shrek. The shamrock-colored puppy isn’t the first to make headlines.

In 2012, this golden – green Labrador puppy was born in Lancashire, England. Two “Hulk pugs” were welcomed to Spain in 2014. In 2017, a golden retriever puppy named Forest was born in the Scottish Highlands, followed by a pup named Pistachio in Sardinia in 2020. As a time of trying times, Pistachio’s owner hopes his green puppy will bring a boost of positivity.
The original color of Fiona was a light lime green, but Rhys has noticed the color has faded. She tells Daily Paws that it may take a week or two for the scar to disappear completely. Rhys and Fiona intend if they are not able to keep her, to find a forever home for her with a close family member. It has been amazing to see It is amazing how many interested people in Fiona’s story and how much joy she has brought to so many.
