She gave birth on the ride home after being saved from a kill shelter

When a dog from a shelter is adopted, it is always a happy occasion. Sometimes, these dogs find their forever homes at just the right time. One pregnant rescue dog gave birth to puppies while being transported from the shelter to her home. Lizzy the terrier’s situation in 2019 wasn’t ideal with a fractured limb and babies on the way. Furthermore, she was allegedly in a high-kill shelter in Georgia and in imminent danger of being killed. Rebecca Lynch, executive director of Poodle and Pooch Rescue of Florida, stepped in just at the right time.

In order to adopt a dog while on vacation in Georgia, Rebecca and her husband visited a shelter knowing that the local, rural shelters frequently had high kill rates. Her purpose was to “rescue the neediest puppy” they had. In an interview with The Dodo, she said, “I had space in my van and wanted to help.” Rebecca took Lizzy home, making a comfortable area in her car for their return trip to Florida. She was initially timid and frightened, but soon warmed up to her new owner. A remarkable thing happened during their voyage: Lizzy became pregnant!

Rebecca continued, “Once she felt secure and at ease, she decided it was time. When she began to pant and get restless, I told my husband, “I think she’s in labor.” Lizzy gave birth to a healthy litter of puppies; she gave birth to three in the car, two more at the veterinarian, and two more on the way home. Lizzy must have waited for safety and protection before bringing her puppies into the world. All of Lizzy’s puppies quickly found families after she arrived at her forever home after a very dramatic journey. Rebecca said in a Facebook post a year later that all of her pups had great homes when they were ready – they’re healthy, loved, and spoilt rotten.

Despite her tragic background, Lizzy has adapted well to her new home and has become a joyful, devoted dog. “Lizzie is so cute. Given everything she has been through in her brief life, she is so kind and trusting,” Rebecca said. “She has a kind and compassionate soul. It’s quite remarkable.”

Every time a dog is rescued from a shelter, it’s a momentous occasion. But for Lizzy and Rebecca, it was an experience they will never forget! Clearly, Rebecca chose the right time to adopt Lizzy.
