A Labrador became a nanny for seven homeless kittens in the UK. Patiently and affectionately, he cares for them, helps them to socialize, and teaches them how to care for themselves.

Previously a stray dog, one-year-old Labrador was rescued and adopted. Perhaps that’s why he became a patient and loving teacher. In the roadside ditch, the seven babies were left to fend for themselves. Bertie’s owner and head nurse at Battersea, Rachel, agreed to take the kittens home.

Bertie, a former shelter dog, lived with her. “Seeing a rescued pet help other animals in need is particularly touching,” Rachel said. Playing with the kittens and teaching them how to care for themselves was Bertie’s job. She was extremely proud of her dog, according to the shelter worker. The kittens were cared for by Rachel and Bertie until they were able to eat and use the litter box on their own.

As the kittens became more independent, they were returned to Battersea Shelter. Families loved them. Seeing them go was sad, but I’m glad Bertie and I gave them the best start possible,” Rachel said. She suggested jokingly that Bertie may enjoy the quiet in the apartment now that the 7 noisy kittens have left.
