A Labrador ‘Adopts’ An Abandoned Duckling After A Fox Kills Its Mother

As a child, Fred grew up with chickens, goats, ducks, and peacocks at Mountfitchet Castle in Essex, England. He suspects a fox had eaten the duckling litter found in the castle grounds without their mother duck. After their mother disappeared without a trace, the golden Labrador stepped in to raise nine ducklings. Fred fell in love with the ducklings the moment he saw them for the first time. He immediately assumed the role of their father. Fred is considered an elderly dog due to the fact that he is 10 years old.

Fred discovered a second set of ducklings who needed his assistance after his new-found fuzzy kids grew up and fled. Muscovy ducks abandoned the six birds after their mother walked off with six of their siblings. Fred bravely stepped up once again at that point. As soon as the 11-year-old dog noticed the ducklings huddled together, he laid down next to them to keep them warm.

Soon, one brave duckling sat on Fred’s head, while others climbed on his back. Jeremy Goldsmith, director of Mountfitchet Castle near Stansted, Essex, where Fred is the resident pet, said Fred took to his role with ease. There is something absolutely wonderful about Fred’s nature. He is absolutely adored by them. The moment Fred settled in around them, Jeremy noted that he didn’t intend to duck out of his duties. Ducklings climbed all over their new mother within minutes after accepting her odd appearance.

Recently, Fred began teaching his children how to swim. Ducklings cannot survive without water, so the smart takes them to “swimming lessons” every day.
