Tom Owens is a State Trooper with the Carroll Police Department, so it’s no surprise that he has seen bears a lot over the years. New England is home to about 5,000 bears. Thus, he knew what to do when he encountered these wild beasts. A mother bear and her cubs were crossing a road when he did not hesitate to cross. A noble reason – saving the cub’s life.
The bear family was spotted by Officer Owens while on patrol. In response, he stopped and waited for them to cross, but the mother and the other three cubs continued to go back and forth. The fourth cub, which was a youngster, couldn’t keep up with his family. The problem was only discovered at that point. Before the police could take action, the mother bear and her three healthy cubs made a difficult choice. When the bears became lost in the underbrush, they left the cub alone.
Owens, determined to help the creature no matter what the cost, stepped out of his vehicle and approached him, remaining by his side while he called New Hampshire Fish and Wildlife for assistance. The officer knew that the mother could have returned at any time, and she would not have been pleased to see a human near her child despite the danger. Owens did not back down.
We waited for help for a short time. Despite this, the Fish and Wildlife rescue crew discovered a fifth cub nearby who was also ill. These two cubs were transferred to a rehabilitation center.
