Bubbles was not a candidate for rescue due to his frostbitten ears and old joints, so he was probably at a lot and heading to Mexico to be slaughtered.
Sue Chapman and Lari McConegly, both from Becky’s Hope Horse Rescue, were rescuing miniature donkeys when they saw the horse weaving among them and heading straight for their trailer. The old horse seemed determined to beat his fate by staging his own rescue. “I believe he thought we wouldn’t notice him if he mixed in with the mini donkeys. “You don’t see me, I’m just one of them,” says Chapman. Bubbles couldn’t be left behind, McConegly told Chapman. They didn’t. Bubbles was bought and taken along with the donkeys to the rescue.
They received an outpouring of support after posting Bubbles’ story on Facebook. Below are the comments from Becky’s Hope Horse Rescue: Warm your heart with this story! As we were bailing mini donkeys from the kill lot, a skinny gray gelding approached our trailer, ignoring the commands of our employees. We had no choice but to let him go. An old man with frostbite-damaged ears waited for a group of mini donkeys to catch up so he could leave on his “freedom trailer.” He surely wasn’t forgotten!
Thanks to your generosity, we had just enough money left over to pay his bail. We fell in love with this sweet, old man the moment he fled the kill lot. Surely nobody would notice him escaping if he just blended in with the mini donkeys!
