Having lost his hearing, Ardi’s family was unable to properly care for him and had to surrender him to a shelter.

A sign language teacher who had lost his hearing found the dog’s perfect owner right away, and soon after he left the shelter, moving into a new home. During that day, Andrew Wilson, a Florida resident, had no intention of bringing a dog home with him.

The only purpose of his visit was to look at the animals and, possibly, choose a pet dog. However, the concept proved to be a bit too popular. Within Ardi’s enclosure, I was warmly welcomed. As I turned to leave, he came up to me and barked quietly, almost imploring me to take him.

Andrew continued. After telling shelter employees that he was taking Ardi home, the man formally adopted the friendly dog. Despite the challenges of caring for a deaf dog, Andrew is qualified for the job.

Appa, the new name given to the dog, is learning sign language well. “Appa understands a few words in sign language and learns new ones rapidly,” Andrew writes.
