The owners of a dog named Freya were surprised when the color of her 8th and last puppy was discovered. Their research quickly revealed that the phenomenon, although rare, was not a concern for the pup. One of the puppies in a litter was born with a green tinged coat, while the other seven puppies were normal-colored. Global News reported this story.

On January 27, 2022, Freya, a 3-year-old female Valley Bulldog – a breed that is not recognized by the FCI and is a cross between a Boxer and an English Bulldog – gave birth to a litter of adorable puppies. When she first gave birth to seven puppies 20/25 minutes apart, her owners thought it was over. An ultrasound revealed seven fetuses a few weeks earlier. In Middle Sackville, Nova Scotia (far eastern Canada), Trevor Mosher and his wife Audra were cleaning Freya when the dog returned to work. When the eighth puppy was born, his masters thought he was stillborn.

His amniotic sac was black, while those of his siblings were translucent. Suddenly, the puppy began to move and make noises. Puppy’s unusual color is caused by bile pigment In an effort to clean him, Trevor and Audra discovered the surprising color of his dress: green.

Worried at first, they searched the Internet and learned that this rare phenomenon wasn’t anything to worry about. In some pregnancies, biliverdin (bile pigment) can get into the placenta and coat the puppies. A puppy’s green color does not last forever; it disappears as it grows.
