Zuca was found on the street in Oregon a few years ago. In addition to looking neglected, the dog was pregnant as well. Her puppies were distributed to foster families after Zuca was caught and placed in a shelter.
However, finding an owner for the dog was not an easy task. Zuca was taken to her by an employee of the shelter, Ronda, six months later. Zuca’s behavior differs greatly from other shelter dogs, as she realized a long time ago.
The dogs were excited to see people and behaved excitedly in their cages, barking and spinning. She just sat there and wiggled her tail timidly, looking at me sadly. After Ronda felt sorry for the dog, she took Zuca to her home. Zuca quickly made friends with Ronda’s cats, who already lived at home.
She developed a particularly close relationship with an elderly cat named Stout. Zuca was very sad when the cat died shortly after. Zuka showed maternal feelings for Monkey one day, after spending a lot of time with Ronda, when a little kitten named Monkey was brought to the shelter.
Monkey was Zuci’s first “son”. Eventually, she became a foster mother for all the orphaned kittens in the shelter. At first, I was very concerned. “Zuca’s size and strength would have made it easy for her to hurt the kittens without even intending to,” Ronda says, but she stayed very patient with them and gentle. They crawl over her like on a big warm toy, and she is very accommodating. She won’t be rude to them even if they scratch or bite her.”
In Ronda’s opinion, Zuca takes care of the kittens more than just taking care of them; she seems to understand what they need. A wild kitten will not climb to him much, but will lie quietly, allowing him to gradually get used to her. If the kitten is socialized, she will lick it and kiss it all over. Zuca has taken care of more than 100 kittens this way over the years.
